Why Lofrans Anchor Windlass for your Boat?

Lofrans has distinguished itself from other companies in the boating industry through persistently providing rugged and durable marine winches. The components of a Lofrans windlass are designed and manufactured specifically for the harsh marine environment, every piece is purpose built, compiling a windlass of engineering excellence.

How to Select an Anchor Windlass for your Boat.

1. Manual or Electric

Manual- The reason to choose a manual windlass is for easier installation and the windlass is less expensive.

Electric- Electric windlasses are the most common fitted winches for boats. The electric windlasses provide copious amount of lifting power to make the retrieval of your anchor and rode a simple task.

2. Rope/Chain or all Chain

Rope/Chain- The main reason to use this combination anchor rode is to have a savings of weight in the bow of the boat.

All Chain- The Chain only rodes help to provide a much smoother retrieval process. Chain is also much stronger than the nylon anchor line.

3. Vertical or Horizontal

Vertical-  The gearbox and motor for a vertical windlass are located below deck, which enables a lower profile.

Horizontal-  The horizontal winch has the gypsy and chain wheel on either side of the windlass housing as opposed to a stack configuration with the vertical windlasses. The horizontal windlass is also appropriate for boats with minimal clearance below the deck.

4. Sizing Considerations

Windlasses are intended to lift the anchor and rode not to pull or drag. If you need help to size a windlass, please give us a call at 619-222-9613.
