Description

SeaStar HF5592 - Single Station Fitting Kit (5/8" Copper Tube)

The SeaStar HF5592 is a single-station fitting kit for steering systems plumbed with 5/8" O.D. copper tubing. It provides the brass SAE 45° flare connections needed to plumb one helm to your inboard cylinder on heavy-duty two-line systems such as Capilano (and compatible Hynautic installs). Ideal when you’re building or re-plumbing a single-station hydraulic system that specifies 5/8" copper runs for lower expansion and crisp helm response.

At a Glance

  • Part No.: HF5592
  • Use: Single station / one helm
  • Tubing size: 5/8" O.D. copper (Type L seamless soft-annealed recommended)
  • Fitting style: Brass, SAE 45° flare
  • Systems: Capilano two-line inboard steering (and select Hynautic/other compatible systems)

Compatibility Notes

  • Capilano 1275V helms typically use 5/8" O.D. copper runs. If your helm is a 1250V, see the HF5590 kit (1/2" copper). The 1350 helm uses 3/4" copper (no OEM kit provided).
  • Use SAE 45° flare connections for copper tube. Apply pipe thread sealant only on NPT threads (never on flare seats).
  • Capilano systems use Dexron II ATF as steering fluid (not SeaStar HF).

Part No. Description Tubing O.D. Use Case
HF5590 Single-station fitting kit 1/2" copper For systems spec’d for 1/2" tube (e.g., Capilano 1250V)
HF5591 Additional-station fitting kit 1/2" copper Add a second helm to a 1/2" system
HF5593 Additional-station fitting kit 5/8" copper Add a second helm to a 5/8" system (pairs with HF5592)

Installation Overview - Copper Tube & Flare Connections

Always follow the installation guide for your exact helm/cylinder. This quick overview highlights best practices when plumbing with 5/8" copper tube and SAE 45° flare fittings.

Tools you’ll likely use

  • Quality 45° SAE flaring tool for 5/8" copper
  • Tubing cutter, deburring tool, measuring tape
  • Appropriate open-end wrenches for flare nuts & NPT adapters
  • Pipe thread sealant (e.g., Loctite P.S.T.) for NPT threads only

Typical steps

  1. Plan runs: Route tube with sweeping bends; avoid tight radii and chafe points.
  2. Cut & prep: Cut square, deburr I.D./O.D., slide flare nut on the tube before flaring.
  3. Flare at 45°: Make clean, full-seat SAE flares (no cracks). Keep flare faces clean and dry.
  4. Seal NPT threads only: Apply thread sealant to male NPT threads if used. Do not use sealant or tape on flare seats.
  5. Tighten: Snug flare nuts to a leak-free seal without over-torque. Recheck after first sea trial.
  6. Bleed & test: Fill with the correct fluid (Dexron II ATF for Capilano), purge air, and inspect for leaks.

FAQs

  • Which helms need 5/8" copper? Capilano 1275V typically specifies 5/8" O.D. copper. The 1250V uses 1/2"; 1350 uses 3/4".
  • Is Type L copper required? SeaStar recommends seamless soft-annealed refrigeration copper, Type L for best performance.
  • Can I add a second station later? Yes - use HF5593 (5/8") as the additional-station kit to pair with HF5592.
